On April 17, 2026, Mrs. Betty Jean Blackwood Bulls departed this life at Harbert Hills Nursing Facility in Savannah, Tennessee. She was born on July 7, 1933, in Cabarrus County, nearMooresville, North Carolina, to the late Irene Blackwood Thomas.
Mrs. Bulls received her formal education at North Chicago Community High School in North Chicago, Illinois.
At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and became a devoted member of the AME Church.
On September 15, 1951, she was united in holy matrimony to the late Algie Elton Bulls. To this union, five children were born, one of whom preceded her in death.
Her family meant the world to her, and she cherished every moment spent with them. Betty and her husband, Algie, shared 64 loving years together before his passing. After retiring from Illinois, they relocated to the Shoals area in search of a more favorable climate. Mrs. Bulls was employed at Abbott Laboratories Pharmaceutical in North Chicago, Illinois, where she worked for fourteen years as a production supervisor. Prior to working outside the home, she graduated from the Madam C. J. Walker School of Cosmetology in Chicago, Illinois, in 1959. She later became a licensed cosmetologist and proudly operated her own beauty shop from her home. Betty found great joy in gardening and caring for her home.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Irene Thomas; her husband, Algie Elton Bulls; and her daughter, Rev. Charlene Bulls-Mills.
Mrs. Bulls leaves to cherish her memory her loving children: Yolanda Bulls Gregory of St. Louis, Missouri; Roderick Bulls, Sr. of Killen, Alabama; YvonneBulls-Smith of Center Star, Alabama; and Tanya Bulls (Kevin) Pearson of Florence, Alabama;seventeen grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; her sister, C. Jean Pope of Hampton,Georgia; and a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Her legacy of love, faith, anddevotion will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
