Smith, Jr, offciatingInterment in Oakwood Cemetery, Tuscumbia, AlabamaThe body will be placed in the church one hour prior.Visitation with the family will be held Wednesday ~ 6-8:00pm, Thompson and Son Funeral Home, Tuscumbia, Alabama.Mr. Fred Johnson, son of Brady and Alice Johnson, was born Nov. 4, 1924, in Newton, Ala. He departed this life Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital, Florence, Ala.Mr. Johnson received his early education in the Dale County School System. Upon graduation, he served in the U.S Navy and received an honorable discharge.He then entered Alabama State College and earned a bachelor of science degree. He did further study at the University of North Alabama and earned a master of science degree from Alabama A&M University. He began his teaching career in 1950 as a mathematics teacher at Trenholm High School. He was promoted to the position of principal and served as the last principal of Trenholm High School before it was integrated into Deshler High School. He served as assistant principal at Deshler and was later promoted to principal and served until his retirement.Immediately upon his arrival in Tuscumbia, Mr. Johnson joined First Missionary Baptist Church and remained a faithful member until his death. He was appointed to the board of trustees. He served as the Bible teacher for the Missionary Society. Mr. Johnson was also a concerned and active citizen in local civic affairs. Mr. Johnson was a life member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. He served as an advisor in the establishment of the University of North Alabama chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. He was a board member of Valley Credit Union, board member of the YMCA of the Shoals, board member of Florence City Board of Education, member of the Colbert County Teacher Association and charter member of the Trenholm Reunion Committee.Those who will cherish his memories are his wife, Blanch Johnson; sons, Marc Edward Johnson (Dion), Donald Perry Abernathy (Sheryl), James Spencer Leach, Steven Lewis Leach; a daughter, Shirley Ann Watkins (Laur'ence); a sister, Lorene Lowe; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and the entire citizenry of this area.Thompson and Son Funeral Home, Tuscumbia, AL., Directing
