Grace Brown Vaughn was born August 11, 1929 in Florence, Alabama. She was the third of 12 children born to Clinton Brown, Jr. and Alice Lovelace Brown. She was united in holy matrimony on May 11, 1947 to Louis Alexander Vaughn. This year, 2024, marked their 77th wedding anniversary.
Having been raised in a Christian family, she accepted Christ at an early age and joined Pisgah A.M.E. Church. She later joined and remained active at Mt. Moriah P.B. Church in Florence, AL. She assisted elderly members with transportation to church or to other appointments as needed. She also worked on the kitchen committee. During her earlier years, she participated in church productions where she created costumes, developed the set, and either assisted or participated with putting on plays for the motherboard of the church.
She worked in various businesses and industries throughout her career and retired as head cook at the University of North Alabama. She attended Northwest Community College and took many classes. Some of them included upholstery and carpentry/cabinet making. Also, she found the time to learn various computer programs.
Mrs. Vaughn’s abilities and skills were many and she was always looking for new, innovative, and creative ways of doing things. She was very artistic and acquired many unique talents. She loved ceramics, artistry glass, flower arranging, cross-stitch, embroidery, antiquing and many other crafts. She always had one or more projects that she was working on.
Other hobbies included gardening, where she and her husband raised tomatoes, green beans, peppers, grapes, figs and other fruits and vegetables. When the crops came in, she was busy making jelly, preserves and either canning or freezing the crop. She also loved making candy around Christmas time.
She had a special love for flowers and dolls. She was always growing flowers both inside and outside of the house. She just had a green thumb for growing and caring for flowers. She also had a great passion for dolls. She acquired different types of dolls and was really good at repairing them. She made cabbage patch dolls and ceramic dolls also.
After a very brief illness, she departed this life on June 5, 2024. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Joice; sisters Mary, Willodean, and Anne; and brothers Cloyd, Johnnie B. and Clinton, Jr.
