Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. “Charm is deceptive, and beauty fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” – Proverbs 31:28-31
Mrs. Josephine Hill Thompson peacefully gained her eternal rest while surrounded by loved ones on Monday, November 3, 2025, in her hometown of Florence, AL, at the age of 84.
Josephine was born to the late Ms. Felure Mae MacDaniel and Mr. Felix Hill on February 17, 1941 in Florence and spent a lifetime deeply rooted in the community that shaped her and that she in turn helped to shape as well.
As a young girl, she attended the Mt. Zion church school. She confessed Christ as Savior and Lord at an early age and became a faithful member of Springhill Missionary Baptist Church where she served for many years and remained committed to her church family until her health declined. Her unwavering devotion to her faith was a guiding light throughout her life as a devoted daughter, sister, niece, wife, mother and grandmother.
On December 29, 1956, she united in holy matrimony to the late Mr. Nelson Eugene Thompson. The two built a life together centered around their faith, family, and hard work and were married for 61 years before his passing. To this union six children were born: Brenda, Kenneth, David, Matthew, Larry and Christopher, whom she loved very much.
At home Josephine was a loving wife, mother and skilled homemaker. She working endlessly so the Thompson home was filled with love and comfort in true southern charm. Josephine, affectionately nicknamed by her husband and close family as “Flutten,” used her God-given talents of hospitality to make her family and guests feel welcome. She was widely revered for her culinary talents, most notably her famous fried apple pies, biscuits, chicken and dumplings, cakes, teacakes and even her homemade sweet tea. She did everything with love and meticulous attention to detail, a true expression of love that united people together across all generations.
Josephine was a mother figure to many. She modeled valuable life lessons in homemaking and homesteading through her passion for sewing, canning, gifting homemade goods to others, and even her love for thrifting, couponing, and shopping.
Quiet by nature but rich in kindness and generosity, Josephine touched countless lives through simple acts of compassion and care. Her gentle and pleasant spirit leaves a legacy of resilience, resourcefulness and motherly love for all who were blessed to know her. She embodied the persona of a Proverbs 31 Woman, with characteristics of diligence, hard work, determination, wisdom, family-mindedness, confidence, and faithfulness.
