Mrs. Katie Elizabeth Bulls Thompson (Liz) was born Feb. 5, 1917, in Center Star, Ala., and departed this earthly life Sept. 2, 2009.She was the third child of 10 born to the late John Thomas Bulls and the late Bazola Brooks Bulls. Additionally, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leather Thompson Sr.; brothers, Walter Bulls and John Thomas Bulls Jr.; and sisters, Delores Bulls, Juanita Ballenger, Indiana Simpson and Katherine Evans.Liz worked on her family's Center Star farm until 1935, when she moved to Waukegan, Ill. In Waukegan, she married Leather Thompson Sr., and they raised three children.In 1976, the Thompsons returned to Liz's roots in Center Star. Liz lived the remainder of her days within short walking distance from her childhood home.Liz was a member of Greater St. Paul AME Church, Bethune Reading and Sewing Circle and Women's Missionary Society.Liz will be remembered for her wonderful flower garden that still bursts with color every spring. She cooked for any and everybody; folks always knew that they were welcome for a hot meal and a warm bed.Liz was cherished by all who knew her, but particularly her surviving relatives, sons, Leather (LaVerne), of Madison, Ala., and Duwayne (Editha), of Killen, Ala.; two daughters, Bazola (Merril) Holloway, of Huntsville, Ala., and Katherine (Elder Lafayette) Whitley, of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Ella Lee White, of Waukegan, Ill.; two brothers, James Otis (Mary) and Algie Elton (Betty) Bulls, both of Killen; six grandchildren, Charlisa (Ken) Edelin, of Middletown, Del., Merril Holloway II, Gregory Thompson, of Madison, Ala., Maria, Deanna and Michael, of Killen, Ala.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson and Son Funeral Home, Florence. The funeral service for Mrs. Thompson will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greater St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, Florence. The Rev. T.W. Parker will officiate.Burial will be in Jordan Cemetery, Killen, Ala..The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.
