I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course; I have kept the faith.
II Timothy 4:7
Leroy Burt was born November 3, 1947, in Florence, Alabama, to the late James Leon and Caroline Watson Burt.
He peacefully departed this life on July 13, 2025, at the Summitt at Mitchell Hollingsworth.
Leroy united with Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. He later united with First Baptist Church, Town Creek, under the pastorage of Reverend Bryce Lipscomb. He loved both churches and his church families.
Leroy was a product of the Colbert County and Muscle Shoals school systems. He attended Mt. Olivia Elementary School, Webster Middle School, and Muscle Shoals High School.
He always had a strong work ethic. He began his work on the family farm and then worked a short time for the City of Muscle Shoals. He found his calling while working with Cecil Smith as a drywall helper. He loved doing drywall work and was good at his job. He prided himself at being able to do the difficult jobs that no one else could or would do. He was the proud owner of Burt’s Drywall and B & L Drywall for over 50 years.
He also enjoyed playing lottery and gardening and looked forward to gardening season every year. Leroy was a man of strong opinion and strong will. He had no problem telling you what he thought and how he thought something should be done. He loved his family and was determined to provide the best for them. Even as his health began to fail, he maintained his family ties and work ethic. His favorite comebacks were, “I’m blessed,” “I got Jesus,” and “God got me.”
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Robert Frank Burt, James Frederick Burt, Charles Burt, and Melvin Burt.
He will be greatly missed by his loving and supportive companion and wife of over 60 years, Shirley Cobb Burt; two devoted children, Kevin Burt of Ellenwood, GA, and Tresha Burt-Hughes (Kenneth) of Lexington, KY; two grandchildren, Marquita Williams (Derrick) of Madison, AL, and Bailee Hughes of Lexington, KY; and two great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, Ariel, Demarius, and Amari of Madison, AL. His family also included his mother-in-law, Romelia Hogan; a sister, Shirley Suttle; five brothers, Thomas Howard Burt, Glenn Hughes Burt, Ulysses (Janet) Burt, Emmitt Burt, and Michael Jarmon; and five brothers-in-law, Jessie (Diane) Cobb, Gary Cobb, Robert (Regina) Cobb, Darryl Cobb, and Roderick (Vicky) Byrd. Leroy had numerous nieces and nephews that adored him and that he truly adored and loved, especially Jerneter Garner, Tynesha Malone, and Keyana Malone. He is also survived by numerous cousins, friends, employees, and his furry great-grand, Minnie/“Toota.”
