Mayzola Mason Vaughn was born on December 11, 1949, to the late Roger Mason and Corine Thompson Mason in Lane Springs, Alabama, and was the 7th of 8 children, being the baby girl of the family.
Mrs. Vaughn accepted Christ and was baptized at the Rutland Chapel CME Church in Lane Springs, Alabama at the age of 12 and maintained a strong foundation in Christ throughout her life.
She attended school in the Cherokee school system and at Burrell Slater High School, graduating from Cherokee High School in 1968. In 1972 she graduated from the University of Noth Alabama where she majored in English, minored in Biology, and then further obtained a Master of Science in Education, being the first in her family to do so.
She was a dedicated English teacher at Russellville High school from 1972 to 1992, taught at Muscle Shoals High School and then Hibbett School. After 25 years of dedication to education she retired in 2001.
In 1972, she married The Reverend, Dr. William Alexander Vaughn and from that union they produced three girls: Dr. Alexia Corine Vaughn, Alexandria Vaughn Williams, and Alisha Vaughn McCombs.
She was passionate about academic and Christian education as she has volunteered as an afterschool tutor and Sunday school teacher. Her motto was “everyone can learn.” She was also concerned about political affairs and was always watching local and national news and thinking about what she can do to make things better. She was active with the Lauderdale chapter of the Alabama Democratic Conference and helped with many voter registration campaigns and on many campaigns for political candidates. Throughout the years she has had many hobbies including painting, knitting, gardening, and sewing outfits for her 3 girls.
Family was important to her, and she always wanted family to spend time together by hosting many gatherings at the house for eating, swimming, and games of spades with her grandchildren. She loved to have fun, crack jokes and was always full of surprises such as foot races with the children, continuing to walk 10 miles a day until her final month of life and even cracking jokes at the hospital. She was preceded in death by 1 brother and 4 sisters.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband the Rev. Dr. William Alexander Vaughn and 3 children: Dr. Alexia Corine Vaughn, Alexandria “Sandy” Williams (Kevin), Alisha Grace McCombs (John) and 4 grandchildren Charis Olivia, John Christian, Bethany Grace, and Lauren Faith.
Two sisters remain to continue: Claudette Goodloe, Ruby Newton and one brother: William Shelton. She has a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and close friends.
