Oliver Murry Croom Sr. was born December 1, 1944 to the late John Louis Croom Sr. and Minnie L. Eggleston Croom in Leighton, Alabama and was called home to be with the Lord on April 3, 2025.
He came to know Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and joined Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Leighton, Alabama. The family later moved to Tuscumbia where he attended and graduated from Trenholm High School.
After graduating from High School Oliver attended J.R. Drake Technical College. He worked for several companies in the community but always had a love of farming, so he continued to work with his father, John L. Croom Sr., and his three older brothers on the family farm. They were successful farmers that produced cotton, soybeans and corn and were often published in the local paper as the first farmers of the season to have the first bale of cotton in Tuscumbia for many years.
Oliver served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict where he received the National Defense Service Medal as a Sharpshooter of the M-14.
Oliver also enjoyed the outdoors, often fishing and hunting with friends and family. He was a humble man, with a lighthearted spirit. He always had a laugh or joke ready to share. He would often share that he hadn’t had his annual haircut, he recently let us know it had been 4 years since he had cut his curly locks. Some of his favorite family jokes included the offerings of air, mayonnaise or syrup sandwiches and the unexpected back of the knee bend that he always waited on the opportunity to surprise you with.
Some were even lucky enough to receive a nickname from him. This made him a favorite among his nieces and nephews.
The fourth of July was always a special treat for the family as Oliver always put on a grand fireworks display on the Croom family farm for all to enjoy.
Oliver’s favorite pastime that almost everyone knew him for, was photography. He absolutely loved taking pictures. He took his camera “EVERYWHERE”. It was a rare occasion to see him without his camera, and in his early years he even painted portraits. Oliver never met a stranger and everyone loved him.
In the last years of his life, he fought several medical battles, and through it all he gave a smile and laughter to all he greeted. He will be remembered and missed by many of the people whose lives he touched.
He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Tiffany Croom Turner (Chris) of Cherokee, Al; son Oliver Croom, Jr. (Bubba), Barton, Al; grandchildren; Dominique Croom, Terrance Johnson, Aaliyah Turner, Aryeil Croom, Cherina Allison, Krisette Croom; greatgrandchildren; Alijah (Hootie Who) Carter, Daxton Croom.; three sisters, Dr. Annie Pearl Croom, of Florence, Doris Savage (John), Wilmington, Delaware, and Gail Collins (Alton), Cincinnati, Ohio; a special nephew; Samuel Brewer, Jr., special cousins; Katie Mason, Sonja Croone and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a multitude of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents: John L Croom Sr. and Minnie L. Eggleston Croom. His Brothers: John L. Croom Jr., James H. Croom, Sr., Napoleon N. Croom, Sr., and Willie L. Croom. Sisters: Gertha Lee Croom, Nina Croom Ashley, Caroline (Sweet) Croom Hallman, Edna Croom Paige and Vernita Croom.
