The late VERA M. BURGESS was born in Franklin County, Newburg, Alabama, to the late Mr. William McCord and Mrs. Mae Fannie Garmon McCord, she was the fifth of five children.
She attended Mt. Hope Church School and Rosenwald High School in Moulton, Alabama. She received her GED from Calhoun Community College.
She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at age 12 and joined Rock Spring Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where she was active in Sunday School and the Missionary Society. She served as secretary for a number of years.
She later met and married Alfred Burgess on November 20, 1948. To this union, one son, Alfred Burgess, Jr., was born. Moving to Moulton, she joined with Freeman Tabernacle Baptist Church \ where she served as secretary of the church, organized and directed the junior class, and supervised B.T.U for many years. She was a member and secretary of the Missionary Society, Order of Eastern Star for ten years. She organized the Moulton Community Chair and served as President for 12 years.
She organized Prayer Band and served as president. She was a worker in the WM’s Educational Convention for 30 years, field worker at East end for 50 years, on the finance committee for 15 years, and was District Queen for three years straight.
She entered eternal rest on Saturday, July 26, 2025.
She leaves to cherish her memory: a son, Alfred Burgess, Jr.; grandchildren, Christerfor and Zachary Burgess; one great-granddaughter, Aliyah Shyann Burgess; special goddaughters, Bobbie Grant and Louise Jones; three godsons, Tony Webb, Walter Young, and George Brackins; many sons and daughters of F. T. M. B. C.; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
